WHO CAUSES IT?
Tetranychus urticae, known as the red spider, is a phytophagous mite that infests a wide variety of crops. Adults measure approximately 0.5 mm and are red or greenish in color. Females lay spherical, translucent eggs on the underside of leaves. After a few days, the eggs hatch into six-legged larvae, which soon transform into eight-legged nymphs. These nymphs go through two stages before becoming adults. The entire process from egg to adult can be completed in a week under favorable conditions, allowing for multiple generations per year. Rapid reproduction and the ability to disperse by wind facilitate its spread. During periods of stress, such as droughts, the population of Tetranychus urticae can increase exponentially, causing severe damage to crops.
SYMPTOMS
In pepper, Tetranychus urticae causes the disease known as spider mite, which results in discoloration and weakening of plants due to the mites feeding on the cellular contents of the leaves. This interferes with photosynthesis and can lead to a significant reduction in crop yield and quality.
- Leaves with yellow Taches
- General discoloration of leaves
- Dry and withered leaves
- Necrotic tissue in severely infested areas
- Presence of fine cobwebs on the underside of the leaves
- Reduction in plant growth
- Decrease in production and quality of fruits
