WHO CAUSES IT?
Heterodera schachtii, known as the cyst nematode, is a pathogen that mainly affects table beet. These nematodes spend most of their lives in the soil, where the eggs in the cyst can survive for years in the absence of a host. When conditions are suitable and host plant roots are available, juveniles hatch and move toward the roots, penetrating and establishing themselves in the root tissues. Once inside, the juveniles feed on the cellular contents, developing into adults. Females swell and eventually form egg-filled cysts on the roots. These cysts release new juveniles into the soil, continuing the cycle. Fertilized females produce hundreds of eggs that develop inside their bodies, which then harden into protective cysts once the female dies.
SYMPTOMS
In table beet, infestation with Heterodera schachtii causes cyst nematode disease. This disease affects the roots, significantly reducing the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients, leading to general weakening and a decrease in the yield and quality of beets.
- Development of nodules and cysts on the roots.
- Discoloration and necrosis of the roots.
- Delay in plant growth.
- Yellowing and wilting of leaves.
- Reduction in the size and quality of beets.
- Appearance of plants with sparse and weak foliage.
- Wilting in conditions of water stress.
- Low sugar production in beets.
