WHO CAUSES IT?
Naohidemyces vacciniorum is a fungus that causes the disease known as rust in blueberries. This pathogen is an obligate biotroph, meaning it depends on a living host to complete its cycle. Its development begins when the spores, known as uredospores, land on the surface of the leaf and germinate in the presence of free water. The hyphae of the fungus penetrate plant tissues through the stomata and develop internally, forming specialized structures that absorb nutrients from the plant. As the fungus establishes, it produces new spores that emerge through lesions on the leaf, ready to be dispersed by wind or water to other susceptible plants. This process can be repeated several times during the growing season, allowing the fungus to spread quickly and cause severe infections if left unchecked.
SYMPTOMS
The rust caused by Naohidemyces vacciniorum severely affects blueberries, weakening the plants and significantly reducing their productivity. The fungus mainly infects the leaves, where it causes the appearance of Taches and pustules that affect photosynthesis and the general health of the plant.
- Yellow Taches on the upper surface of the leaves.
- Orange or reddish pustules on the underside of the leaves.
- Chlorosis and necrosis of affected leaves.
- Premature fall of leaves.
- Reduction in plant growth and vigor.
- Decrease in the production and quality of the fruits.
- Presence of spores in the growing environment.
