WHO CAUSES IT?
Xanthomonas vesicatoria is a phytopathogenic bacteria that causes the disease known as bacterial scab in pepper. This bacterium has a complex life cycle that begins with the penetration of plant cells through the stomata of the leaves. Once inside the host, it reproduces and colonizes plant tissues, forming necrotic lesions that extend along the leaves, stems and fruits. Xanthomonas vesicatoria can survive in soil, in the remains of infected plants and in contaminated seeds, which facilitates its persistence between growing seasons. In addition, it can be transported by irrigation water, wind, agricultural tools and insects, which contributes to its dispersion and increased incidence of the disease.
SYMPTOMS
Bacterial scab caused by Xanthomonas vesicatoria in pepper causes a series of characteristic symptoms that negatively affect the yield and quality of the crop. - Necrotic lesions in the form of sunken Taches on the leaves, stems and fruits.
- Formation of bacterial exudate in the lesions, which can be yellow, orange or brown.
- Discoloration and wilting of affected leaves.
- Delay in plant growth.
- Weight loss and deformation of the fruits.
- Decrease in the production and quality of the fruits.
- Greater susceptibility to other diseases and damage from adverse environmental factors.
