DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Phyllophaga spp., commonly known as "blind hen," are beetles whose larvae cause significant damage to various crops. These insects go through a complete metamorphosis that includes the egg, larva, pupa and adult stages. Adults emerge from the ground in the spring and summer, feed on the leaves of trees and shrubs, and mate. Females lay eggs in the soil, from which larvae emerge that feed on plant roots for one to three years, depending on the species and environmental conditions. The larvae, which are large, white and C-shaped, are mainly responsible for the damage, as they feed intensively on the roots, weakening the plants and making them more susceptible to diseases and environmental stress. After completing larval development, they pupate in the soil and eventually emerge as adults, completing the cycle.
SYMPTOMS
In berries, the disease known as "blind man's hen" caused by Phyllophaga spp. It manifests itself mainly through damage to the roots. The larvae feed on the roots, which interferes with the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients, leading to a series of symptoms that severely impact crop health and yield.
- General wilting of the plant.
- Reduced growth and weakening of plants.
- Yellowish and chlorotic leaves.
- Regressive death of branches.
- Bitten and damaged roots.
- Premature fruit drop.
