DESCRIPTION

WHO CAUSES IT?

Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) is a pathogen belonging to the genus Potyvirus, which infects various cucurbits, including pumpkin. This virus is transmitted primarily by aphids in a non-persistent process, meaning that aphids can acquire and transmit the virus within a short period of time after feeding on an infected plant. PRSV replicates within host cells, using the plant's cellular machinery to produce new viral particles. These particles accumulate in the cytoplasm and are transported through the phloem, disseminating throughout the plant. Symptoms of infection may take days or weeks to appear, depending on environmental factors and the resistance of the plant. The virus's high mutation rate and its ability to evade host defenses further complicate its management and control.

SYMPTOMS

In pumpkin, watermelon mosaic virus caused by PRSV can cause symptoms that significantly affect plant development and productivity. These symptoms can vary in intensity, depending on the squash variety and environmental conditions, but generally result in deformed growth and a reduction in the quality and quantity of the crop.
- Mosaic and mottling on the leaves, with patterns of green and yellow areas
- Deformation and curling of the leaves
- Chlorotic streaks on the stems
- Reduction in fruit size
- Appearance of ring Taches on fruits
- Reduced overall growth and plant weakness

- Use pumpkin varieties resistant or tolerant to PRSV, if available.
- Implement a rigorous aphid control program through the use of appropriate insecticides and the promotion of natural enemies of aphids.
- Practice crop rotation with species not susceptible to PRSV to reduce viral inoculum pressure.
- Remove and destroy infected plants as soon as they are identified to prevent the spread of the virus.
- Maintain strict control of weeds in and around the crop field, as they can serve as reservoirs for aphids and viruses.
- Use physical barriers, such as anti-insect mesh, to protect crops from aphid infestation.
- Disinfect work tools and agricultural machinery to prevent mechanical transmission of the virus.
- Regularly monitor aphid populations and the presence of viral symptoms in the crop.
- Promote cultivation practices that promote plant health and vigor, such as balanced fertilization and adequate irrigation.
