DESCRIPTION
Pathogen description
Alternaria citri is a phytopathogenic fungus that affects citrus trees, causing the disease known as citrus brown spot or alternariosis. This fungus produces spores (conidia) that spread through the air, infecting new plants. Alternaria citri can survive on infected plant debris as well as in soil. The fungus germinates under favorable conditions, invading plant tissues and causing lesions on leaves, stems and fruits.
Disease description
Citrus brown spot caused by Alternaria citri manifests itself with the appearance of brown Taches on the leaves, stems and fruits. The lesions can expand and cause necrosis, weakening the plant and affecting its productivity. In fruits, lesions can cause a reduction in commercial quality.
• Appearance of brown Taches on leaves, stems and fruits.
• Lesions that can expand and cause necrosis.
• Weakening of the plant and reduction in the quality of the fruits.
• Possible premature fall of affected fruits.

• Use citrus varieties resistant or tolerant to Alternaria citri.
• Practice proper pruning to improve air circulation and reduce humidity.
• Disinfect pruning tools and equipment to prevent the spread of the fungus.
• Apply specific fungicides following local recommendations.
• Avoid excess humidity in crops, maintaining good irrigation management.
• Remove and destroy infected plant parts and plant remains.
