WHO CAUSES IT?
Planococcus sp. It is a species of mealybug that affects mangoes. These insects have an oval body and are covered in a white waxy secretion, which gives them a cottony appearance. Its life cycle includes several stages: egg, nymph and adult. Adult females, which are immobile, produce a large number of eggs beneath the protective wax they secrete, while males are winged and can move more freely in search of females to breed with.
SYMPTOMS
The disease it produces on mango is known as cottony mealybug. General symptoms include:
• Presence of white or cottony Taches on the leaves, branches and fruits of the mango.
• Reduction in plant vigor and growth.
• Yellowing and wilting of leaves.
• Loss of fruits and decrease in the quality of the harvest.
