How does it work?
Beer traps are a homemade and ecological method to control snails and slugs, especially in orchards and gardens. These mollusks are attracted by the smell of beer or a fermented mixture, fall into the container and drown. They are mainly used to protect seedlings and vegetables. The appearance of traces of slime on the ground indicates the presence of slugs or snails and helps decide where to place the traps.
How is it prepared?
To prepare an effective trap you need:
- 1 empty jar or plastic container
- Beer (fill half the container)
(Alternatively: a mixture of baking yeast and sugar solution)
Bury the container in the ground with the top slightly elevated above the surface. If possible, add a raised cover to prevent rain from diluting the solution.
How to place it?
- Place the trap in the afternoon, near the most affected plants.
- Bury it with the edge just above ground level.
- Add a cover (like an inverted plate) to prevent water from entering.
- Review every 1-2 days and delete content if necessary.
- Fill the trap with fresh beer after each cleaning.
- Keep it while there are snails or slugs present.
