DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Mealybugs are insects belonging to several species within the superfamily Coccoidea. They are pests that affect a wide range of plants. Mealybug life cycles vary depending on the species, but generally include the following stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Females usually deposit eggs in protective masses or sacs on the surface of plants or in cracks in the bark. After hatching, the nymphs (known as "crawlers") are mobile and look for suitable places to feed. As they feed, the nymphs develop a waxy exoskeleton that provides protection. Once mature, females generally remain motionless, while males, if present, can be winged and move to mate. Mealybugs feed on plant sap, inserting their sucking mouthparts into plant tissues, allowing them to extract nutrients and weaken the plant.
SYMPTOMS
Mealybug infestation on plants can lead to a number of problems that affect the health and vigor of the plants. These insects feed on the sap, which can cause general weakening, water stress and reduced growth. Additionally, mealybugs excrete a sugary substance called honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty fungi, darkening the leaves and reducing photosynthesis. Symptoms include:
- Presence of small insects with a waxy covering on stems, leaves and fruits.
- Yellowish or chlorotic leaves.
- Premature fall of leaves and fruits.
- Reduction in plant growth and vigor.
- Appearance of sooty fungi on the affected parts.
