PARASITIC WASPS

AVISPILLAS PARÁSITAS

How do they act?

Parasitic wasps are tiny insects that act as biological controllers by laying their eggs in or on pests. When the larvae hatch, they feed on the host, causing it to die naturally. Although they are often almost invisible to the naked eye, their action is essential to reduce populations of harmful insects without the need for chemical products. Each species of wasp usually specializes in one type of pest, which makes them very precise tools in biological control.

How to attract them?

To attract and keep parasitic wasps in your crops, follow these recommendations:

- Avoid chemical insecticides, especially systemic and broad-spectrum ones.
- Plant small, compound flowers such as coriander, dill, fennel, yarrow and wild carrot, which provide nectar and pollen.
- Maintain biodiversity in the garden, mixing crops and avoiding bare areas without vegetation.
- Install natural shelters such as hedges or areas with spontaneous herbs.
- Do not use yellow sticky traps excessively, as they may accidentally trap them.
- If you release them commercially, do so at dawn or dusk and avoid applying any treatment shortly before or after.

What pests do they control?

Parasitic wasps act against various pests, depending on the species. Some, such as Trichogramma, attack moth and butterfly eggs (caterpillars), others, such as Aphidius, parasitize aphids, and there are also species that act on whiteflies, beetles, leaf miners and mealybugs. They are especially useful in horticultural, fruit and ornamental crops.
