DIATOMACEOUS EARTH
TIERRA DE DIATOMEAS
How does it work?
Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring fine powder composed of fossilized remains of microscopic algae called diatoms. It is completely harmless to humans and animals, but lethal to insects such as ants. It works mechanically: upon contact with the insects' body, its sharp particles damage the protective wax layer that covers their exoskeleton, causing dehydration and death due to water loss. It does not generate resistance and is a safe method for controlling pests in the home or garden.
How is it prepared?
Diatomaceous earth does not require complex preparation, but it is important to choose the right type: it should be food-grade diatomaceous earth.
Dry application recipe:
- Use the powder directly as is, without mixing.
- If you want to apply it wet (for example on vertical surfaces), you can mix:
- 1 cup of diatomaceous earth
- 4 cups of water
- Mix well and apply with a sprayer. When it dries, it adheres to the surface.
Store it in a dry, closed place, as it loses effectiveness if it becomes damp.
How to apply it?
Dry application mode: sprinkle diatomaceous earth on ant trails, at nest entrances, cracks, passageways or around affected plants.
Wet application mode: spray the mixture on surfaces where ants or their routes can be seen. When dry, the powder becomes effective again.
Frequency:
- Apply every time the area is cleaned or after rain or intense irrigation.
- As prevention, it can be applied once a week in risk areas.
Tips:
- Wear a mask when applying to avoid breathing fine dust.
- Do not apply on flowers if there are bees, although it is not toxic, it may bother them.
- It is more effective in dry environments.
