ACTIVITY

Preventive

Description

A contact fungicide belonging to the dithiocarbamate group, widely used for the preventative control of numerous fungal diseases in horticultural, fruit, cereal, and field crops. It acts in a multi-site manner, simultaneously interfering with multiple enzymes and essential metabolic processes of the fungus, especially by inactivating sulfhydryl (-SH) groups involved in cellular respiration and energy production. This causes severe metabolic disturbances that prevent spore germination and mycelial growth. It exhibits exclusively preventative activity and high surface persistence, forming a protective barrier on the plant. It is particularly effective against downy mildew, Alternaria, anthracnose, and numerous foliar diseases. Its multi-site action and low risk of resistance have historically made it a benchmark in resistance control programs and integrated disease management.

Application Conditions

It should be applied preventively by foliar spraying, ensuring uniform and complete coverage of the entire plant surface. It is recommended to apply before conditions are favorable for infection and to repeat the application after heavy rains or high disease pressure.

Compatibility in Treatment Programs

Compatible with numerous systemic fungicides and IPM programs

Cross-Resistance

No relevant cross-resistances are known due to its multi-site action

Maximum Number of Applications

Variable depending on crop and current regulations; low risk of limitation due to resistance

Recommendations for Use

Highly recommended in mixture or alternation with site-specific fungicides to reduce selection pressure

Compatibility with Beneficial Organisms

Generally yes when used according to label instructions, although intensive applications may partially affect some non-target organisms

Technical Notes

Mancozeb has been one of the most important multi-site preventative fungicides worldwide due to its broad spectrum and low risk of resistance. Its effectiveness depends on preventative applications and good coverage. In some countries, its authorization has been restricted or withdrawn due to regulatory and toxicological issues.
