Sulfur fertilizers – Instructions and tips for treating sulfur deficiency in plants
Application method:
Application tips:
• Apply during cooler hours, at dawn or dusk, especially if applying as a foliar spray.
• Keep the soil slightly moist after applying sulfur fertilizers to improve absorption.
• For soils with a high pH or calcareous soils, elemental sulfur can help slightly acidify the soil, improving the availability of other nutrients such as iron and phosphorus.
• Avoid mixing in the same tank with highly alkaline products, as this can inactivate sulfates.
• Adjust the dosage according to the crop type and the level of deficiency; vegetables, brassicas, and fruit trees generally have higher sulfur requirements.
• Repeat the application every 3–5 weeks, depending on the formulation and the severity of the deficiency.
• In young or sensitive plants, perform a patch test before applying to the entire plant.
• For maintenance, it is recommended to combine sulfur with organic matter to improve its retention in the soil.
Toxicity:
• For humans: Low toxicity at agricultural doses. May cause mild skin, eye, or respiratory irritation if fine dust is handled. Wear gloves and a mask during intensive applications.
• For bees: Non-toxic. Sulfur fertilizers do not affect pollinators as they are not pesticides.
• For natural allies: Safe for beneficial insects and natural predators. Fertilizing sulfur should not be confused with fungicidal sulfur, which can have an impact if used incorrectly.
• For the environment: Low impact if applied correctly. Avoid excess sulfur in acidic or very wet soils, as it can further acidify the substrate or promote leaching.
