TRUNK WHITEWASHING

ENCALADO DEL TRONCO

How does it work?

Trunk liming is a traditional practice of applying a lime mixture to tree trunks. This technique acts as a physical barrier and repellent against ants and other insects that ascend the trunk. In addition, it protects the bark from sunburn and the appearance of fungi or lichens. Lime creates an alkaline and irritating surface that makes the ants uncomfortable, preventing them from climbing towards the foliage where they usually protect aphids or scale insects.

How is it prepared?

Simple ingredients are used to prepare the liming mixture.

Recipe:
- 1 kg of hydrated lime (agricultural lime or slaked lime)
- 5 liters of water
- (Optional) 100 ml of white glue or casein to improve adhesion

Preparation:
1. Pour the water into a large container.
2. Add the hydrated lime little by little while stirring constantly.
3. If desired, add the glue and mix well until you obtain a liquid and homogeneous paste.
4. Let it rest for a few minutes before applying.

Use with gloves and protective glasses when handling lime.

How to apply it?

The application is carried out by painting the mixture directly on the trunk, from the base to a height of approximately one meter, covering the entire circumference well.

How to use:
- Apply with a brush or thick brush on clean and dry trunks.
- Repeat each time the layer deteriorates due to rain or wear.

Frequency:
- As prevention, apply 1 or 2 times a year (at the beginning of spring and autumn).
- If there is ant activity, check every month and reapply if necessary.

Tips:
- Avoid applying on wet trunks or during rainy days.
- If there are deep cracks in the bark, clean before applying for better adhesion.
- Do not apply to young trees with very thin or sensitive bark.
