COMPOST DE HOJAS
Leaf compost: a natural enhancer of available iron in the soil
How does it work?
How is it prepared?
Its preparation is simple and relies solely on plant waste, especially dry leaves.
Ingredients:
• Dry leaves (any type, preferably deciduous)
• Soft green waste (grass clippings or small prunings)
• Water
• Compost bin or a pile in the garden
Steps:
1. Lightly shred the leaves to accelerate decomposition.
2. Prepare a mixture of approximately 70% dry leaves and 30% green waste.
3. Layer the mixture in the composter, alternating leaves, green waste, and, if possible, a little soil.
4. Moisten the pile: it should be damp, but never waterlogged.
5. Turn the pile every 2–3 weeks to oxygenate and activate microbial activity.
6. Maintain moisture throughout the process. 7. The compost will be ready in 3–6 months, when it has an earthy appearance, a pleasant smell, and a homogeneous texture.
How to apply it?
• Spread a 2–5 cm layer around the base of the plant (mulch).
• Lightly mix into the top few centimeters of soil to improve integration.
• Water after applying to activate organic acids and microorganisms.
• Repeat every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer.
• In pots, apply only a thin layer (1–2 cm) to avoid overwatering.
• For moderate to severe deficiencies, it can be combined with iron chelates, but the compost will help maintain stable iron levels in the long term.
