DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Compsus sp., commonly known as the "virgin burrita", is an insect belonging to the family Curculionidae. Adults are small, metallic green beetles that feed mainly on leaves and young shoots. The females lay their eggs on the foliage, and after hatching, the larvae fall to the ground where they develop, feeding on the roots. This larval development can last several weeks, depending on environmental conditions. Upon completing their development, the larvae pupate in the soil, emerging as adults after a few weeks. Adults can live for several months, reproducing and perpetuating the cycle. The activity of Compsus sp. It is closely linked to climatic conditions, being more active in hot and humid climates.
SYMPTOMS
In blackberries, infestation by Compsus sp. It causes a disease that manifests itself through various symptoms due to the direct damage caused by both the adults and the larvae. The adults feed on the leaves and shoots, causing defoliation and reduction of the photosynthetic area, which weakens the plant and reduces its productivity. The larvae, by feeding on the roots, interfere with the absorption of water and nutrients, which can lead to poor growth and wilting.
- Defoliation of leaves and shoots
- Damage to roots that causes poor growth
- Reduction in plant vigor
- Yellowing and wilting of leaves
- Presence of adults on the leaves
- Visible damage to new and tender shoots
