DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Mealybugs are a group of insects belonging to the superfamily Coccoidea, which includes various species that affect a wide variety of plants. Mealybugs have a complex biology and go through several stages of development, beginning as eggs laid by females in or on the host plant. Nymphs, known as "crawlers", emerge from the eggs and are mobile and disperse to find suitable places on the plant to feed. After attaching to the plant, the nymphs go through several molts, growing and developing through several instars. Adult females are usually sessile and covered by a protective shell, while males, which are less common, can be winged and mobile. The complete development cycle can vary depending on the species and environmental conditions, with some species capable of producing multiple generations in a single year.
SYMPTOMS
The disease known as mealybugs affects blackberries, causing a series of problems that compromise the health and productivity of the plant. Mealybugs feed on the sap of the plant, weakening it and reducing its vigor. Additionally, they excrete honeydew, a sticky substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold fungi, which further reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant and affects the quality of the fruits.

- Deformations in shoots and fruits.
- Premature fall of leaves and fruits.
- Appearance of black mold (sooty mold) on the excreted molasses.
- Delayed growth and decreased plant performance.
