DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Coccus viridis, known as the green mealybug, is an insect of the Coccidae family. This insect presents a simple metamorphosis that includes the egg, nymph and adult stages. Adult females, which are bright green and oval in shape, lay their eggs on the underside of avocado leaves. After hatching, the nymphs go through several molts while they feed on the plant's sap. Nymphs are flat and light yellow, while adults develop a waxy protective covering. Adult scale insects are sedentary, attaching themselves to leaves and branches as they continue to feed and reproduce.
SYMPTOMS
The green scale insect causes a disease in avocados known as scale. This disease affects the general health of the plant, reducing its vigor and the quality of the fruits. The symptoms of the infestation are visible on the leaves, branches and fruits of the avocado, causing damage that can lead to a significant decrease in production.
- Presence of green scale insects on the underside of the leaves and branches.
- Yellowing and premature leaf fall.
- Reduction in plant growth and vigor.
- Formation of sooty mold (black mold) due to the excretion of honeydew by mealybugs.
- Deterioration of the quality of the fruits.
