DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Bremia lactucae is an oomycete fungus that causes the disease known as downy mildew in lettuce plants. This pathogen has a complex life cycle that involves spores produced in structures called sporangia, which are spread through the air or water and can survive in the soil for long periods in the form of oospores. Under conditions of high humidity and moderate temperatures, spores germinate and form specialized structures called appressoria, which allow them to penetrate plant tissues and cause infection.
SYMPTOMS
Downy mildew is a disease that affects lettuce plants, causing symptoms such as chlorotic and necrotic Taches on the leaves, stems and flowers. In addition, white, powdery mycelial growth can be observed on the underside of infected leaves. General symptoms include premature defoliation of plants and reduced yield.
