Phytophthora
Crown Or Neck Rot
Phytophthora Sp.
Pathogen:
Oomycete
Type:
Risk to the plant:
CRITICAL

DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Phytophthora sp. is a genus of oomycetes, also known as aquatic fungi, that causes various plant diseases, including crown or neck rot in apple trees. These pathogens thrive in moist soils, where they release motile zoospores that can infect the roots or base of apple trees. Zoospores can travel through water currents and infect new plants.
SYMPTOMS
Crown rot in apple trees, caused by Phytophthora sp., can cause the death of roots and tissue at the base of the trees. Symptoms include wilting and yellowing of the leaves, and often a general weakening of the tree which can lead to the death of the apple tree.
• Wilting and yellowing of leaves.
• Death of the roots.
• General decline of the plant.
• Weakening of the base of the trunk and crown.
• Loss of vigor and productivity in the tree.
