DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Aphis fabae and Myzus persicae are two species of aphids that affect sugar beets. Aphis fabae, known as the black aphid, is dark in color and reproduces rapidly asexually during spring and summer through parthenogenesis, producing viviparous females without the need for males. As climatic conditions change, they can produce winged forms that migrate to other host plants. In autumn, they reproduce sexually to produce winter-hardy eggs. Myzus persicae, the green peach aphid, follows a similar cycle, but has a wider range of host plants. In both cases, adults and nymphs feed on plant sap, causing significant damage to crops.
SYMPTOMS
Infestation by Aphis fabae and Myzus persicae in sugar beet causes a disease commonly known as aphid, which results in a significant decrease in crop yield and quality. The feeding of these aphids weakens the plants and makes them more susceptible to other diseases, in addition to being vectors of viruses.
- Rolled and deformed leaves.
- Appearance of yellowish Taches or chlorosis.
- Presence of a sticky substance called molasses that attracts black fungi such as sooty mold.
- Reduction in plant growth.
- Transmission of viruses, such as beet yellowness virus.
- Pests visible on the underside of the leaves and on tender shoots.
