DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Spongospora subterranea f. sp. subterranea is a soil pathogen that affects potato crops, causing the disease known as powdery scab. This pathogen is a parasitic protozoan that produces spores that can survive in the soil for several years. During their life cycle, the spores infect the roots and tubers of the potato, causing lesions on the plant and tubers.
SYMPTOMS
Powdery scab produces symptoms on potato tubers, characterized by the formation of superficial lesions that resemble scabs or warts. These lesions can be small and scattered or form large Taches, and are usually light brown in color. The disease affects the quality of the tubers, reducing their commercial value and making them more susceptible to secondary infections.
• Superficial lesions on the tubercles, similar to scabs or warts.
• Light brown Taches on the surface of the tubers.
• Reduction in the quality and commercial value of tubers.
