DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Synchytrium endobioticum is a phytopathogenic fungus that causes the disease known as warty scab in potatoes. This fungus forms sporangia that develop within the tissues of the potato, especially in the roots and tubers. The sporangia release zoospores that disperse through the soil and can infect other nearby plants. The fungus can survive in the soil for several years, making it difficult to control.
SYMPTOMS
Warty scab causes deformities in potato tubers, making them unsuitable for consumption or sale. Symptoms include the formation of warts or bumps on the surface of the tubers and, in severe cases, on the roots and stems. These warts can vary in size and shape, from small bumps to large deformities that can affect the quality of the potato.
