DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV) is an RNA virus of the *Bromoviridae* family and the *Cucumovirus* genus, characterized by its wide host range and high dispersion capacity. It is distributed worldwide and affects numerous plant species, including economically important crops. Its structure consists of icosahedral particles with three segments of single-stranded RNA, each with specific functions in replication, movement, and suppression of the plant's immune response. Once the virus enters the plant cell, it disassembles and releases its genetic material into the cytoplasm. There, the viral RNA polymerase initiates the transcription and replication of the viral genomes, allowing the synthesis of structural and movement proteins. Through the plant's vascular system, the virus is transported to new cells, establishing a systemic infection. Its interaction with host cellular factors determines the severity of the symptoms and its ability to spread within the plant tissue.
SYMPTOMS
In banana trees, CMV causes a disease characterized by foliar symptoms and alterations in plant development. The infection interferes with normal physiology, affecting photosynthesis and nutrient transport, which can lead to a reduction in crop production and quality.
- Chlorosis and mosaic in young leaves.
- Deformations and reduction in leaf size.
- Necrosis on the margins of the leaves in severe infections.
- Delayed growth and reduction in the general vigor of the plant.
- Appearance of yellowish bands or chlorotic areas on the leaf blade.
- Loss of yield in fruit production.
