Rusty nails or iron shavings: a home remedy to correct iron deficiency
How does it work?
How is it prepared?
This method is very simple and requires no complex preparation.
Recipe:
• A handful of old nails, screws, or iron filings.
• Water (if you wish to accelerate oxidation).
• A jar or container.
Steps:
1. If the nails are only slightly rusted, leave them in a jar of water for several days to encourage oxidation.
2. When they acquire a deep reddish color, they are ready to use.
3. Iron filings can also be used directly without prior oxidation.
4. Drain excess water before placing them in the soil.
How to apply it?
• Bury 3–6 rusty nails or a small amount of wood shavings around the base of the plant, 5–10 cm deep.
• In small pots, use less: 1–2 nails are sufficient.
• Keep the substrate slightly moist to encourage iron release.
• Apply every 1–2 months, as it is a slow and gradual release.
• Avoid excess iron, especially in clay or heavy soils.
• Do not use on plants sensitive to metal accumulation.
