How does it work?
Funnel traps are a very useful homemade solution to catch flying beetles that affect orchards and gardens. They work by creating an easy entry but a difficult exit: insects are attracted to a bait placed at the bottom of a bottle, enter through a funnel made with an inverted top, and once inside, they find it very difficult to get out. This technique is effective because it combines attraction with a physical barrier, without the need for chemicals.
How is it prepared?
To prepare a homemade funnel trap, you only need simple materials and bait attractive to beetles:
- 1 plastic bottle (1.5 or 2 liters)
- Scissors or knife (to cut the bottle)
- Duct tape (to seal the trap)
Natural bait:
- Option 1: pieces of very ripe or fermented fruit
- Option 2: mixture of water, sugar and yeast
- Option 3: piece of cucumber or host plant if you know which one they prefer
Cut the bottle in half, invert the top to form a funnel, and place it inside the base. Add the bait to the bottom and seal with tape. Place the trap near the affected plants.
How to place it?
When using this trap, place it in a sunny location and at the height of the leaves or flowers that beetles usually attack. It is important to check and empty the trap every 2 or 3 days, especially in hot weather, to prevent bad odors or other insects from accumulating. You can reinforce its effectiveness by changing the bait regularly and placing several traps if you have a large garden. It is also a good idea to combine it with other preventive measures such as repellent plants or physical barriers.
