Nettle slurry: how to prepare and apply it as a fungicide, insecticide, and bactericide
How does it work?
Nettle slurry is a natural preparation based on maceration of nettle leaves (Urtica dioica), known for its insecticidal, fungicidal and plant growth stimulant properties. Its action is due to the presence of compounds such as formic acid, salicylic acid, iron and nitrogen, which strengthen the natural defenses of plants. It acts as a repellent against insects such as aphids, mites, green mosquitoes or red spiders, and also helps prevent certain fungi by improving the general health of the plant.
How is it prepared?
To prepare nettle slurry you need simple ingredients and a little patience. The basic recipe is the following:
- 1 kg of fresh nettles (preferably collected before flowering)
- 10 liters of chlorine-free water (it can be rainwater or let the tap rest for 24 hours)
Preparation:
1. Chop the nettles and place them in a large (non-metallic) container.
2. Add the 10 liters of water.
3. Stir once a day and let it ferment for about 10 to 15 days, until it stops making bubbles (indicates the end of fermentation).
4. Strain the liquid and store the slurry in dark bottles or airtight containers, in a cool place without direct light.
Optional: You can add a stone or floating lid to reduce odors.
How to apply it?
Nettle slurry should be used diluted to avoid damaging plants. Here are some tips for use:
- Recommended dilution: 1 liter of slurry in 10 liters of water (10% dilution).
- Method of application: Spray on the leaves and stems of the plants in the morning or at dusk, avoiding the hours of the sun.
- Frequency: It can be applied every 7 to 10 days as a preventive treatment. In case of active infestation, apply every 3 to 5 days until you notice improvement.
- Extra tip: It can also be used as a foliar fertilizer or to water plants, always diluted.
Avoid applying during the flowering season if there is a risk of attracting pollinating insects, as their odor can be strong.
