WHO CAUSES IT?
The green aphid, scientifically known as Myzus persicae, is a species of sucking insect that feeds on the sap of a variety of plants, including geranium. These small insects are usually green, although they can vary in shades. They reproduce quickly and can form dense colonies on tender parts of the plant, such as shoots and buds. The green aphid not only weakens the plant by extracting its nutrients, but it can also transmit viruses through its saliva, which further aggravates the damage.
SYMPTOMS
The disease caused by the green aphid in geranium manifests itself mainly in the general weakening of the plant and in the deformation of the leaves and shoots. Symptoms include curling of leaves, yellowing and wilting of shoots, as well as the presence of a sticky substance known as honeydew on the surface of the plant. Furthermore, the presence of aphid colonies can attract other predatory insects and encourage the appearance of pathogenic fungi.
