DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Albugo candida is a pathogenic oomycete that infects various species of cruciferous plants, including radish. This pathogen produces spores that are dispersed mainly by wind and water. When the spores land on a susceptible plant, they germinate and produce hyphae that penetrate the plant tissues through the stomata. Within the plant, the pathogen develops intercellularly, forming reproductive structures called sporangiophores that emerge through the plant's epidermis, releasing new spores that can infect other plants. Albugo candida also forms sexual spores, known as oospores, which can survive in the soil for long periods of time, allowing the pathogen to persist from season to season.
SYMPTOMS
White rust caused by Albugo candida in radish manifests itself with the appearance of white or yellowish pustules on the leaves, stems and sometimes on the flowers. These pustules are agglomerations of spores that develop under the epidermis of the plant and eventually break the surface. The infection can lead to significant deformation of the affected parts of the plant, interfering with its normal growth and development.
- White or yellowish pustules on leaves, stems and flowers
- Deformation of leaves and stems
- Yellowing of the leaves
- Reduction of plant growth
- Necrosis of infected tissues

- Implement a crop rotation with species not susceptible to Albugo candida.
- Use certified pathogen-free seeds.
- Improve soil drainage to avoid excessive moisture conditions.
- Apply preventive treatments with specific fungicides against oomycetes.
- Maintain the cleanliness of agricultural tools and machinery to prevent the spread of the pathogen.
- Remove and destroy the remains of infected plants.
- Avoid sprinkler irrigation and opt for drip irrigation to reduce the spread of spores.
- Regularly monitor cultures to detect the first signs of infection.
- Use physical barriers such as mulching to reduce contact of spores with plants.
