#FM03#

Fungicida

PROPINEB

Fungicide

GROUP

FRAC M03

GROUP NAME

Dithiocarbamates

MoA (Mode of Action)

Multisite action on enzymes and cellular metabolic processes

RESISTANCE LEVEL

Low

CLASSIFICATION

Contact

TYPE

Multisite

ACTIVITY

Exclusively preventive

Description

A contact fungicide belonging to the dithiocarbamate group, used for the preventative control of numerous diseases caused by phytopathogenic fungi, especially downy mildew, Alternaria leaf spot, scab, blight, and leaf spots in fruit trees, vegetables, vineyards, and field crops. It acts by interfering with multiple essential metabolic processes of the fungus through the inactivation of sulfhydryl (-SH) groups of enzymes involved in cellular respiration and other fundamental metabolic pathways. Due to its multi-site action, it simultaneously affects various points in the pathogen's metabolism, hindering the development of resistance. It exhibits exclusively preventative activity and high efficacy against spore germination and the initial stages of infection.

Application Conditions

It is applied as a preventative foliar spray, ensuring uniform and complete coverage of the plant surface. As it is a contact fungicide, it must remain on the plant tissue before infection to guarantee its effectiveness. Repeat applications may be required after heavy rainfall due to its limited surface persistence. It is recommended to integrate it into integrated pest management programs and alternate its use with systemic fungicides to broaden the spectrum and duration of control.

Compatibility in Treatment Programs

Compatible with numerous systemic fungicides and IPM programs; frequently used in resistance-control mixtures

Cross-Resistance

No relevant cross-resistances are known due to its multi-site action

Maximum Number of Applications

According to authorized label conditions and cultivation strategy

Recommendations for Use

Recommended in mixture or alternation with systemic fungicides to improve persistence and reduce selection pressure

Compatibility with Beneficial Organisms

Generally yes when used according to authorized recommendations, although it may present some environmental toxicity

Technical Notes

Propineb was historically notable for its broad spectrum of activity and low risk of resistance development thanks to its multi-site mechanism. Its effectiveness depends on preventative applications and good crop coverage. In several countries and regions, its use has been restricted or withdrawn due to toxicological and regulatory concerns related to dithiocarbamates and their metabolites.
