WHO CAUSES IT?
*Botryosphaeria sp.* is a group of pathogenic fungi commonly found on woody plants, including grapevines. These fungi are necrotrophic, meaning they kill host cells and then feed on the dead tissue. They can remain dormant in the plant tissue for long periods, waiting for favorable conditions to activate. Infection usually begins through wounds on the plant, such as those produced during pruning. Once the fungus penetrates, it colonizes the vascular tissues, causing obstruction to the flow of water and nutrients. During periods of environmental stress, such as drought or extreme heat, the pathogen can activate more aggressively, causing visible symptoms in the vine. *Botryosphaeria sp.* produces spores that are dispersed mainly by wind and rain, infecting new plants through wounds or vulnerable Taches in the bark.
SYMPTOMS
Vine decline caused by *Botryosphaeria sp.* is a progressive disease that affects both the productivity and longevity of vines. The first symptoms are usually subtle, but over time, the plant begins to show more obvious signs of weakening. In advanced stages, the disease can cause the death of entire branches and, eventually, the entire plant. The toxins released by the pathogen deteriorate internal tissues, seriously affecting grape production and wine quality.
- Yellowish and withered leaves, especially in periods of water stress.
- Reduction in the size and number of clusters.
- Necrosis of the arms and trunk of the vine.
- Regressive death of entire branches.
- Presence of dark cankers and lesions on the bark.
- Sudden death of young or weakened plants.

Recommendations
- Maintain adequate pruning and avoid large or unnecessary wounds, making sure to disinfect tools between each plant to avoid the spread of the pathogen.
- Remove and destroy the branches or affected parts of the plant to prevent the fungus from continuing to spread.
- Apply specific fungicides preventively, especially after pruning, to protect the wounds and prevent the fungus from entering the plant.
- Improve soil drainage and avoid excess watering, since poorly drained soils can favor the infection and spread of the fungus.
- Plant vine varieties more resistant to *Botryosphaeria sp.* in areas where the disease is prevalent.
- Regularly monitor the vineyard to detect early symptoms of infection and apply control measures before the fungus spreads.
- Avoid water stress and provide optimal growth conditions to reduce the susceptibility of plants to the fungus.
