WHO CAUSES IT?
Dalbulus maidis, commonly known as the corn planthopper or leafhopper, is a hemipteran insect of the Cicadellidae family. This insect develops through several stages, beginning as eggs that are laid in the leaf tissue of the corn. After hatching, the nymphs go through five nymphal stages, during which they feed on plant sap by inserting their stylets into the conducting vessels. Upon reaching maturity, the adults, which are winged and have a high dispersal capacity, continue feeding and can transmit phytopathogenic diseases. The duration of each nymphal stage can vary depending on environmental conditions, especially temperature and humidity. Adult females can lay hundreds of eggs, ensuring the proliferation of the species under favorable conditions. This life cycle can be completed in a few weeks, allowing for several generations per year.
SYMPTOMS
Dalbulus maidis infestation in corn produces a series of symptoms that significantly affect plant health and performance. These insects not only cause direct damage by feeding on plant sap, but they are also vectors of viral diseases such as Corn Striped Dwarf Virus (MRDV) and phytoplasmas that cause corn stunting diseases. Affected plants show a series of symptoms that vary in severity depending on the intensity of the infestation and environmental conditions.
- Yellowing of the leaves.
- Dwarfism and reduced growth.
- Chlorotic Taches and necrosis on the leaves.
- Malformation and curling of the leaves.
- Reduction in the size and number of ears.
- Premature death of plants.

Biological control
-
Recommendations
- Regularly monitor corn fields to detect the presence of Dalbulus maidis early.
- Use corn varieties that are resistant or tolerant to the pest.
- Implement crop rotation to interrupt the life cycle of the insect.
- Keep the field clean of weeds that could serve as a refuge for the pest.
- Promote biological control through the conservation of natural enemies such as parasitoid wasps and generalist predators.
- Apply specific insecticides when populations exceed economic damage thresholds, following technical recommendations.
- Avoid excessive use of insecticides to prevent the development of resistance.
- Ensure good agronomic management, including adequate fertilization and irrigation, to keep plants healthy and less susceptible to attack.
