False Rust, False Blight Or Leaf Smut
Graphiola Phoenicis
Pathogen:
Fungus
Type:
Risk to the plant:
HIGH
Micosis/Hongos

WHO CAUSES IT?
Graphiola phoenicis is a pathogenic fungus that mainly affects palm trees, although it can also infect other plants in the same family. This fungus manifests itself through the formation of small black or brown pustules on the leaves, known as sori, which contain reproductive spores. Spore germination is favored by conditions of high humidity and warm temperatures. Once the spores come into contact with a susceptible leaf, they germinate and produce hyphae that penetrate the leaf tissues, growing intercellularly. As the fungus develops, it forms new sori, releasing more spores that can be spread by wind and water, thus infecting new plants. This process can be repeated several times throughout the growing season, facilitating rapid spread of the pathogen under favorable conditions.

SYMPTOMS
The false rust or leaf smut caused by Graphiola phoenicis in palm plants is characterized by mainly affecting the leaves, reducing their photosynthetic capacity and gradually weakening the plant. This disease is easily identified by the presence of characteristic pustules on the surface of the leaves, which can cause a series of harmful symptoms.
- Appearance of small black or brown pustules on both surfaces of the leaves.
- Deformation and discoloration of the affected leaves.
- Chlorotic Taches around the pustules.
- Premature fall of leaves.
- Reduction of plant vigor and growth.
- Lower production of flowers and fruits.
- Increased susceptibility to other pathogens.

RECOMMENDATIONS
- Avoid wetting the leaves when watering, do it directly to the ground.
- Don't put the plants too close together, leave room for air to circulate.
- Remove leaves or diseased parts as soon as you see them.
- Use natural fungicides such as baking soda, copper or horsetail.
- Do not reuse soil from plants that were sick.
- Clean the tools well before and after using them.
- If you grow indoors, open windows or use fans from time to time.
