WHO CAUSES IT?
Empoasca sp., commonly known as leafhoppers, leafhoppers, leafhoppers or cigarreras, is a group of insects belonging to the family Cicadellidae. These insects are small, generally green, and have a great jumping capacity. Adults deposit their eggs in the tissue of host plants. From these eggs emerge nymphs, which go through several molts until they become adults. Nymphs and adults feed by sucking plant sap, which provides them with the nutrients necessary for their development and reproduction. This feeding process causes damage to plants due to loss of sap and injection of toxins that interfere with normal plant growth. The populations of Empoasca sp. They can grow rapidly in favorable conditions, which can lead to severe infestations in short periods of time.

SYMPTOMS
The disease caused by Empoasca sp. In plants it manifests itself mainly through physical and physiological damage. The feeding of these insects causes a series of symptoms that affect the health and performance of the plants.
- Yellow or whitish Taches on the leaves.
- Deformation and curling of the leaves.
- Reduction in plant growth.
- Premature fall of leaves.
- Appearance of mottling and chlorosis on the leaves.
- Necrosis on the edges of the leaves.
- General weakening of the plant.

Biological control

Recommendations
- Regularly monitor plants for early signs of infestation.
- Use yellow sticky traps to capture and monitor the presence of leafhoppers.
- Apply specific insecticides to control Empoasca sp. populations, following the manufacturer's recommendations and respecting the deficiency periods.
- Introduce natural enemies such as lacewings and ladybugs, which feed on leafhoppers.
- Maintain good hygiene in the crop, eliminating and destroying infested plant parts.
- Encourage crop diversity and crop rotation to reduce insect populations.
- Implement physical barriers, such as mesh, to protect plants from the entry of leafhoppers.
- Avoid excess nitrogen fertilization, which can make plants more susceptible to infestation.

RECOMMENDATIONS
- Check the back of the leaves frequently, especially in dry weather.
- Spray water on the leaves to increase humidity and prevent them from settling.
- Keep plants healthy with good watering and adequate light.
- If you see cobwebs or damage, clean the leaves with a damp cloth or pressurized water.
