DESCRIPTION

WHO CAUSES IT?

Venturia pyrina is an ascomycete fungus responsible for the disease known as pear spot or scab. This pathogen survives in remains of fallen leaves during the winter in the form of pseudothecia, which are reproductive structures where ascospores develop. In spring, mature ascospores are released during periods of humidity, being dispersed by the wind to the young shoots and leaves of the pear tree. Upon reaching a susceptible tissue, the spores germinate and infect the plant through the cuticle, without the need for wounds. During the growing season, the fungus also produces conidia in lesions that can cause new secondary infections, spreading rapidly under favorable humidity and temperature conditions. This ability to produce multiple infection cycles in a single season makes Venturia pyrina a very aggressive and difficult to control pathogen.

SYMPTOMS

In the pear tree, Venturia pyrina causes spotting or scab, a disease that mainly affects the leaves, fruits and young shoots, reducing the quality and yield of production. The symptoms begin with the appearance of dark, velvety Taches on the leaves and fruits, which can merge and cover large areas, causing deformation and premature falls.

- Dark, velvety Taches on the leaves
- Deformations and scars on the fruits
- Premature fall of leaves and fruits
- Lesions on young shoots
- Delay in plant growth
- Reduction in fruit quality
