DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Sphaceloma prinum is a pathogenic fungus that mainly affects pome fruit trees, causing the disease known as scab. This fungus thrives in conditions of high humidity and moderate temperatures. It begins its cycle by infecting young plant tissues, especially during spring and early summer. The pathogen produces conidia in active lesions, which are dispersed by wind, rainwater, and contact with agricultural tools. Conidia germinate in the presence of moisture and penetrate plant tissues through stomata and wounds. During the winter, the fungus survives on infected plant debris and perennial lesions on branches, preparing to initiate new infections in the following growing season.
SYMPTOMS
The scab disease caused by Sphaceloma prinum affects pome fruit trees, manifesting itself through a series of symptoms that compromise the health and productivity of the plants. Initial infections present as small brown Taches that expand and become raised, crusty lesions on leaves, branches and fruits. These lesions can cluster and form larger necrotic areas, leading to deformed fruits and reduced commercial quality.
