DESCRIPTION

WHO CAUSES IT?

Sunblotch viroid is a phytopathogenic agent composed of naked RNA, known to cause sunblotch disease in avocado (Persea Americana). Despite its small size and apparent simplicity, this pathogen can have devastating effects on avocado production, affecting both the quality and quantity of fruit produced.

SYMPTOMS

Sunblotch disease in avocado is characterized by a series of symptoms that include a mottled pattern on the leaves, with pale yellow to light green areas, often accompanied by leaf deformation and twisting. To prevent and control sunblotch disease in avocado, it is essential to implement integrated pest management practices. This includes selecting resistant varieties where possible, regularly inspecting trees for early signs of the disease, and removing infected plants to prevent the spread of the viroid. Additionally, controlling insect vectors and disinfecting pruning tools can help reduce transmission of the pathogen between trees.
