WHO CAUSES IT?
Alternaria cucumerina is a phytopathogenic fungus that attacks cucurbits, such as pumpkins, cucumbers and zucchini. This pathogen is characterized by being a necrotrophic fungus, which means that it obtains nutrients from dead or dying plant cells. It has a wide geographical distribution and can survive on the remains of infected crops in the soil, as well as on contaminated seeds. Alternaria cucumerina produces abundant spores that are easily dispersed through air and water, contributing to its rapid spread in cucurbit crops.
SYMPTOMS
The disease caused by Alternaria cucumerina in cucurbits is known as leaf blight. Symptoms of this disease include the appearance of necrotic Taches on the leaves of affected plants. These Taches usually have a dark center surrounded by a yellow ring, and may expand as the disease progresses. Over time, leaves can wilt and drop prematurely, weakening the plant and reducing its ability to produce quality fruit.
