DESCRIPTION

WHO CAUSES IT?

Colletotrichum circinans is a phytopathogenic fungus that causes the disease known as anthracnose in onion crops. This fungus is characterized by forming sporulation structures (conidia) in concentric circles, hence its name. These spores are released into the air and water, facilitating the spread of the disease. The pathogen can survive in infected plant remains and in the soil, thus being able to reactivate the infection in the following growing season.

SYMPTOMS

The anthracnose caused by this fungus on onions manifests itself as dark, sunken or depressed Taches on the leaves and bulbs. These Taches can enlarge and become lesions with dark edges, affecting the plant's growth capacity and reducing the quality of the bulbs.

• Dark, sunken or depressed Taches on the leaves.
• Lesions with dark borders that expand and may cover significant areas.
• Decomposition and necrosis of infected tissues.
• Reduction in the quality and quantity of the harvest due to damage to the bulbs.
