DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Powdery mildew, caused by the fungus Podosphaera xanthii, is a common disease that affects cucurbits, including zucchini, squash and cucumbers. This fungus, also known as white mold, is characterized by its powdery, whitish appearance that forms on the leaves, stems and fruits of infected plants. Podosphaera xanthii thrives in conditions of high relative humidity and moderate temperatures, and its spores can spread easily through air, irrigation water, and direct plant-to-plant contact. This pathogen can significantly weaken plants, reducing their ability to photosynthesize and affecting their performance.
SYMPTOMS
The disease caused by powdery mildew in cucurbits manifests itself mainly in the form of a layer of white or grayish powder on the leaves, stems and fruits of the plants. These Taches may start out as small white Taches and gradually expand, covering large areas of the plant. In addition to the characteristic dust, affected leaves may show deformation and curling, while fruits may develop Taches or deformations that reduce their quality and commercial value.
