DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Fusarium solani f. sp. cucurbitae is a fungal pathogen that causes the disease known as root and neck rot in squash plants. This pathogen has a complex life cycle that begins with the release of spores into the soil. Once in the soil, the spores germinate and produce mycelial structures that infect the roots of the host plants. The fungus develops within the root and neck tissues of the plant, causing severe damage that can lead to the death of the plant.
SYMPTOMS
Root and collar rot causes a number of general symptoms in squash plants, including:
- Progressive wilting of the plant.
- Yellowing and necrosis of the leaves.
- Root and neck rot, which can be soft or dry.
- Reduction in the growth and development of the plant.
- Possible death of the plant in advanced stages of the disease.
