DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Phereoeca uterella, known as the case moth, is a small lepidopteran of the Tineidae family. This moth is notable for its larvae, which build small protective cases from silk and environmental materials. Adult females lay eggs in dark, protected places near food sources. The larvae emerge and feed on various organic materials, carrying their cases as they move. These larvae go through several larval stages before pupating inside their cases. The pupal phase culminates with the emergence of adults, which are nocturnal and live only a few days, during which time they mate and the females lay new eggs, restarting the cycle.
SYMPTOMS
The panicle moth or case moth, caused by Phereoeca uterella, affects quinoa by feeding on plant parts, mainly during its larval phase. The larvae hide in protective cases and can cause significant damage to the plant by consuming plant tissue and weakening the plant's structure.
- Presence of small silk cases attached to the plant.
- Damage to leaves and stems, with eaten areas.
- Loss of vigor in the plant.
- Delay in plant growth.
- Damage to the panicles, affecting performance.
- Evidence of larvae inside the cases.
