DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is a pathogen that belongs to the Bromoviridae family and the Cucumovirus genus. It is one of the most widely distributed plant viruses and affects a wide variety of plants, including tomato. CMV has a genome composed of three positive-sense single-stranded RNA segments. Transmission of the virus is mainly through aphids in a non-persistent mode, meaning that the insect vectors can transmit the virus to healthy plants for short periods after having acquired the virus by feeding on infected plants. Once inside the plant, the virus uses the host's cellular machinery to replicate and spread, moving from cell to cell and through the vascular system to infect new areas of the plant. The infection results in the alteration of normal cellular processes, manifesting in various symptoms depending on the type of infected plant and environmental conditions.
SYMPTOMS
In tomato, infection by cucumber mosaic virus causes a disease that significantly affects plant development and productivity. Symptoms are diverse and can vary depending on the strain of the virus and environmental conditions.
- Mosaic and mottling on the leaves, with alternating light and dark green areas.
- Deformation and curling of leaves.
- Reduction in the size of the leaves.
- Appearance of chlorotic rings and Spots with rings on leaves and fruits.
- Necrosis in some areas of the leaves and stems.
- Delay in the general growth of the plant.
- Reduction in the quantity and quality of the fruits produced.
