DESCRIPTION

WHO CAUSES IT?

Colletotrichum coccodes is a phytopathogenic fungus that causes the disease known as anthracnose in potato crops. This fungus can survive in the soil and in the remains of infected plants for long periods, even in the absence of host plants. During its life cycle, the fungus produces conidia that can be dispersed through the air or water to infect new potato plants. Additionally, it can also spread through infected tubers during harvest or storage.

SYMPTOMS

Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum coccodes causes damage mainly to potato tubers. Symptoms include dark, sunken Taches on the skin of the tubercles, which may be surrounded by a lighter-colored halo. As the infection progresses, these Taches can spread and cause tissue decomposition, reducing the quality of the tubers.

• Dark, sunken Taches on the skin of the tubers, surrounded by a lighter halo.
• Decomposition of tuber tissues.
• Reduction in the quality and quantity of the harvest.

• Use potato varieties resistant to Colletotrichum coccodes.
• Practice crop rotation with non-host plants to reduce the presence of the fungus in the soil.
• Avoid overhead irrigation, which can spread fungal spores.
• Maintain good hygiene in cultivation tools to prevent spread.
• Store tubers in cool, dry conditions to minimize the risk of infection.
• Regularly monitor crops for early signs of the disease.
