Oomycete
Type:
Risk to the plant:
HIGH

DESCRIPTION
WHO CAUSES IT?
The pathogen Peronospora sp. is an oomycete that causes downy mildew on several plants, including blackberries. This pathogen begins its cycle in the soil, where the oospores, resistant structures, can survive for long periods in infected plant remains. Under favorable humidity and temperature conditions, oospores germinate, producing motile zoospores that swim in the water film on leaves and other plant tissues. These zoospores penetrate plant tissues through the stomata, developing inside the plant. The pathogen forms sporangiophores that emerge through the stomata and produce sporangia on the surface of the leaves, which are dispersed mainly by wind and water, infecting new plants. This production of sporangia can be repeated several times during the growing season, especially under conditions of high humidity and moderate temperatures.
SYMPTOMS
In blackberry, downy mildew caused by Peronospora sp. It mainly affects the leaves, stems and fruits. The disease manifests itself as chlorotic or yellowish Taches on the upper surface of the leaves, while a grayish downy mold forms on the underside. This infection reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, weakens the tissues and can lead to premature leaf fall and fruit loss.
- Chlorotic or yellowish Taches on the upper surface of the leaves.
- Grayish downy mold on the underside of the leaves.
- Reduction of the photosynthetic capacity of the plant.
- Weakening of plant tissues.
- Premature fall of leaves.
- Loss of fruits.
