WHO CAUSES IT?
Simaethis pariana, known as the leaf caterpillar, is a lepidopteran that mainly affects various plant species, including the fig or fig tree. The adult female lays her eggs on the underside of the leaves. The eggs are small, whitish in color, and hatch into larvae after an incubation period of a few days. The larvae, light green in color and with a darker longitudinal stripe, feed voraciously on leaf tissue, causing defoliation. These caterpillars go through several larval stages before forming a pupa. Pupation occurs in the soil or between leaves, where they remain until they emerge as adults. Adults are small butterflies with colorful wings, which restart the reproductive cycle. The total development time from egg to adult can vary depending on environmental conditions, especially temperature and humidity.
SYMPTOMS
The infestation of Simaethis pariana in figs or fig trees causes a disease that manifests mainly in the leaves, affecting photosynthesis and the general vigor of the plant. The caterpillars feed on the foliage, causing progressive weakening of the plant.
- Leaves with perforations and bitten edges.
- Presence of caterpillars visible on the underside of the leaves.
- Significant loss of leaf mass.
- Dry and withered leaves.
- Partial or total defoliation in severe infestations.
- Reduction in plant growth and vigor.
