WHO CAUSES IT?
The pathogen Sphaeropsis dalmatica or Bostryosphaeria dothidea is a fungus that affects olive trees, known to cause the disease known as olive gusset. This fungus produces resistance structures called perithecia, which develop in dead or dying plant tissue. The perithecia release ascospores when conditions are favorable, generally in the presence of humidity. These spores can infect healthy parts of the olive trees, such as branches, leaves or fruits, and continue their infection cycle.
SYMPTOMS
In the olive tree, the disease can manifest itself with various symptoms, such as the wilting of branches, the appearance of Taches on leaves and fruits, and the regressive death of branches. In general, a decrease in the vitality and productivity of the tree is observed. The main symptoms are:
• Withering of branches.
• Appearance of Taches on leaves and fruits.
• Regressive death of branches.
• Decrease in the vitality of the tree.
• Damage to the bark of branches and trunk.
