How to recognize and combat fusarium or basal rot in garlic
Fusarium Or Basal Rot
Fungus
Type:
Risk to the plant:
HIGH
Fusarium Sp.
Pathogen:

Fusariosis
WHO CAUSES IT?
Fusarium sp. is a group of soil pathogenic fungi that infects a variety of plants, including garlic, causing diseases such as fusariosis or basal rot. These fungi are characterized by producing asexual spores (conidia) and sexual spores (ascospores), which allow them to spread and survive in the soil for long periods. Infection begins when fungal spores come into contact with garlic roots, especially under conditions of high humidity and favorable temperatures. The fungus penetrates the roots and moves through the conductive vessels, obstructing the flow of water and nutrients, resulting in tissue necrosis. As the disease progresses, the fungus produces mycelium that spreads into the soil, infecting new plants and forming resistance structures that perpetuate the infection cycle.
SYMPTOMS
Fusarium rot or basal rot caused by Fusarium sp. It is a disease that seriously affects garlic crops, compromising both the quality and quantity of the harvest. Symptoms begin with a progressive yellowing of the lower leaves, followed by a general wilting of the plant. The garlic bulb shows signs of rot, with tissues becoming soft and watery, and brown rings often seen at the base of the bulb.
- Yellowing of the lower leaves
- General wilting of the plant
- Soft, watery rot in the bulb
- Presence of brown rings at the base of the bulb
- Root necrosis.
