Aphid: Symptoms and damage on peaches and nectarines
1709890758744.png

WHO CAUSES IT?

Aphids are small insects belonging to the superfamily Aphidoidea and include various species that affect peach, peach or nectarine crops. These insects have soft bodies and can vary in color from green and yellow to black. Aphids reproduce rapidly through parthenogenesis, where females give birth to live young without the need for mating. In temperate climates, aphids have a seasonal cycle with summer generations that are asexual and winged or wingless, and a sexual generation in late summer that produces cold-resistant eggs. These eggs overwinter and hatch in spring, restarting the cycle. Aphids feed on plant sap, inserting their stylets into the tissues and extracting the necessary nutrients, which can considerably weaken the plant and transmit phytopathogenic viruses.

SYMPTOMS

In peach, peach or nectarine, aphids cause a disease that weakens the plants and affects the quality and yield of the fruit. Aphid infestation causes various visible and physiological symptoms in plants, compromising their general health and production.
- Curling and deformation of the leaves
- Yellowing of leaves and new shoots
- Presence of sticky honeydew on leaves and fruits, which attracts sooty fungi
- Reduction in plant growth and vigor
- Deformation and reduction in fruit size
- Transmission of phytopathogenic viruses
- Presence of aphid colonies on shoots, leaves and fruits
- General weakening of the plant and loss of production

Recommendations

- Regularly monitor crops for early aphid infestations.
- Introduce and conserve natural enemies such as ladybugs, lacewings and parasitoid wasps.
- Use horticultural oils and insecticidal soaps to suffocate aphids without damaging the plant.
- Implement physical barriers and sticky traps to reduce the aphid population.
- Apply specific phytosanitary treatments in critical phases of the aphid cycle.
- Maintain good crop rotation practice to reduce pest accumulation.
- Promote biodiversity in the garden to support natural biological control.
- Avoid excess nitrogen fertilization that favors the growth of tender shoots and attracts aphids.
- Prune and remove infested parts of the plant to reduce sources of infestation.
- Perform adequate watering to keep the plant healthy and less susceptible to infestation.
